Highways improvements and three major projects will be delivered in Peterborough after councillors approved plans which will benefit motorists, pedestrians and residents.
At a meeting at Peterborough Town Hall this week, cabinet members approved the authority’s Transport Capital Programme for 2024/2025, which will see Milestone Infrastructure, the council’s highways partner, carry out works over the next 12 months totalling £6.8 million.
Members also agreed for Milestone to deliver three significant projects for a combined £8.1 million – Cygnet Bridge, City Centre Hostile Mitigation and Extreme Weather highways improvements.
Councillor Gavin Elsey, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Environment and Climate Change, said: “We are fully committed to maintaining and improving the city’s highways network. By agreeing this positive programme, along with the three major schemes, we are delivering on our key aims of supporting active travel and passenger transport, as well as improving accessibility.
“The works will ease congestion and promote walking, cycling and public transport, tying in with our goal to reduce carbon emissions. The programmes will also improve the city’s connectivity and resilience, ensuring that existing routes and facilities are maintained appropriately.”
The Transport Capital Programme for 2024/25 will see several maintenance schemes carried out including the enhancement of roads, bridges and street lighting as well as pothole repairs. Funding for this work has been provided via grants from the Department for Transport.
Following approval of the council’s 2024/2025 budget last month, £8.1 million has been allocated to delivering three schemes that are corporate priorities.
Up to £6 million will be spent on constructing Cygnet Bridge, a new footbridge over the river Nene, providing a sustainable and suitable link between Fletton Quays and the Embankment site.
As a preventative measure, over £1.1 million will be allocated to ensure the city centre is further protected from a hostile attack.
Repairs and resurfacing work will be carried out on highways which have been damaged following extreme weather conditions, totalling £1 million. This will help ensure safe travel and prevent key routes having to close creating a knock-on effect around the city.
Milestone Infrastructure have successfully completed several major schemes for the council since 2013 and their positive performance resulted in a five-year contract extension in October 2023.
